Since 1993, A Clean Vision has had the privilege of cleaning homes throughout the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. Over more than three decades, we have learned a great deal about cleaning—but we have also learned something more important: homes tell us a lot about how people live.
One lesson stands out above all others. A comfortable home does not have to be a perfect home.
Real homes have shoes by the door, books on tables, pet hair on the sofa, children’s toys on the floor, and dishes that occasionally wait until morning. A home is meant to be lived in. The goal of cleaning is not to erase every sign of daily life. It is to create an environment where people can relax, function, and enjoy the place they call home.
We have also learned that small habits make a big difference. A few minutes spent putting things away, wiping down a kitchen counter, or dealing with clutter before it grows can prevent a small mess from becoming an overwhelming project. Consistency usually matters more than perfection.
Another lesson is that clutter can sometimes feel more stressful than dirt. When countertops disappear beneath papers, laundry piles up, or every surface becomes a temporary storage area, a home can begin to feel smaller and more chaotic. Restoring even a little order can make a room feel dramatically different.
Most importantly, cleaning should support your life—not dominate it.
People are busy. There are jobs, families, pets, appointments, hobbies, and countless other demands competing for attention. Spending an entire weekend cleaning may leave the house looking better, but it may also take away time that could have been spent enjoying it.
After 33 years, perhaps the biggest lesson we have learned is that a clean home is really about creating room for the things that matter.
It is about walking through the door and feeling comfortable. It is about inviting friends over without worrying about the house. It is about having more time for family, rest, hobbies, and the life happening beyond the cleaning list.
