Before the Guests Arrive: The Upper Valley Holiday Home Reset

The holidays arrive at your front door carrying more than guests—they bring wet boots, winter coats, extra meals, overnight visitors, and a house suddenly working twice as hard.

In the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, November and December create a particular kind of challenge. Thanksgiving gatherings begin as colder weather settles in, and by December, snow, salt, sand, mud, and moisture become part of everyday life. Add holiday cooking, family visits, pets spending more time indoors, and extra traffic through the house, and even a well-kept home can start to feel overwhelmed.

The good news is that holiday cleaning doesn’t have to be one exhausting, all-day effort. A better approach is a two-stage holiday reset.

Stage One: The November Deep Reset

Before the busiest part of the season begins, focus on the areas that are hardest to deal with once guests start arriving.

Begin with the entryway. In an Upper Valley home, this space becomes command central for boots, coats, hats, gloves, snow, and mud. Clear unnecessary clutter, make room for guest coats, and create a practical place for wet footwear. A sturdy mat inside and outside the door can prevent a surprising amount of dirt from traveling through the house.

In The Upper Valley, A Mudroom Is Essential. Here is an example of a clean and organized mudroom.

Next, pay extra attention to the kitchen and bathrooms. These rooms will probably see more use than any others during the holidays. Clean appliances, wipe cabinet fronts, scrub sinks and fixtures, and remove anything from counters that does not need to be there.

Also refresh guest bedrooms now rather than the night before company arrives. Wash bedding, dust surfaces, vacuum or clean floors, and make sure visitors have somewhere to place a suitcase or hang clothes.

This is also a good time to vacuum upholstered furniture, clean frequently touched surfaces, and thoroughly clean hardwood, tile, and carpeted floors.

Think of November as the month when you establish a clean baseline.

Stage Two: The December Maintenance Plan

Once the deep clean is finished, the goal shifts from cleaning everything to maintaining the areas that matter most.

Entryways should remain near the top of the list. Sweep or vacuum frequently, and watch for melting snow, sand, and road salt that can damage flooring if left too long.

In the kitchen, wipe counters and the stovetop after cooking rather than letting several days of holiday prep build up. Empty the refrigerator of expired food before major grocery trips to make room for holiday meals and leftovers.

You can prepared your refrigerator for the holidays too!

Bathrooms usually need shorter but more frequent attention. A quick wipe of the sink, mirror, toilet, and fixtures can keep them ready for unexpected visitors.

Approach living rooms and family rooms with the same practical mindset. Straighten cushions, put away clutter, vacuum visible debris, and focus on the surfaces guests are most likely to notice.

You do not need to clean every closet or reorganize the basement before Christmas.

The goal is not perfection. It is readiness.

Clean for the Way You Actually Live

Holiday magazine photos often show homes that look untouched, but real holiday homes are full of activity. Dishes sit in the kitchen, boots line the entryway, packages wait to be wrapped, children visit, pets roam, and people move from room to room.

A successful holiday home isn’t one that stays spotless.

It is one that feels comfortable and welcoming.

By doing the heavier work before the season becomes hectic and concentrating on high-use areas afterward, you can keep cleaning from becoming another source of holiday stress.

If preparing the house takes more time than the holidays leave you, professional help can make the season much easier.

After all, the best part of the holidays is not having a perfectly clean house. It is having the time and space to enjoy the people who walk through the door.
